The bladed trocar is a sharp blade for cutting through tissue housed within a bladeless tip. The outer plastic sheath acts as a shield to protect the blade when not in use. The locking mechanism provides additional safety by preventing the plastic sheath from exposing the blade once abdominal access has been obtained.
